This beautiful birth story was sent to me from Madeleine. This is her first birth.
I was 40 weeks + 9 days pregnant and that morning I had my third stretch and sweep. That whole day I had my fingers crossed that something would happen as my midwives had scheduled for me to be induced the next day at 4:30 pm. I got home afterwards and decided I would bounce on my exercise ball all day to encourage my darling girl to come. I had tried all the tricks, sex, pineapple, walking, exercise ball, well all the natural stuff anyway. I had some niggly pains all day but I had those for around one week or more prior to this so I thought it was just the same thing.
At around 5 o'clock I had felt a little bit of a trickle but had suspected that I had peed myself as the baby was pushing hard down on my bladder now! This happened again at 7:30 pm, and again a while later. I went and had a shower and noticed it was a bit of a pink tinge but I just thought I would go with it.
It got to 9:30 pm and I asked my partner if we could go to bed just to get some rest. As I laid in bed I had some contractions although I had thought they may just be braxton hicks like I had the past week. They kept coming every 7 or so minutes so I decided to ring my midwife and I mentioned about the pink tinge. She asked me to come straight up to be checked out. We grabbed the bags and headed up to the hospital, I felt like I was going to pee my pants the whole time because of the pressure, haha.
I waddled into the hospital and made a pit stop at the toilets. I went through to the maternity ward and the midwife took me through to get checked. She checked my pad and saw it was pink so decided to do a swap to see if it came back positive to amniotic fluid, and it did. While she did that swap she checked how dilated I was and I was 2 centimeters. We monitored my contractions although they were irregular, they were definitely there. They asked if I wanted any pain killers or sleeping tablets, although, I decided to say no because I was fine.
My partner got to stay with me overnight which was great as I had support through my little, irregular contractions. The night passed and the midwife came in at 8:00am to check on me and see how I was going. The midwife wanted to see how dilated I was and I was 4 cm! She was happy with my progress and happy with how my contractions were going so she took me into the birthing suite at 8:30 am and broke the rest of my waters because they were only slowly leaking. Straight after my contractions started up. I decided I wanted to go into the shower to relieve the pain and the shower was the best thing, all the pain just went away. After what felt like 10 minutes (it was really 2 and a half hours) I could feel pressure so hopped out of the shower and tried to sit on the exercise ball although that was too uncomfortable. The contractions were getting intense so I decided to ask for gas. The gas helped out an extreme amount, I think it mainly just helped me breathe better. The midwife checked me and I was 8 centimeters and before I knew it I was pushing. That feeling that comes over your body when you are needing to push is indescribable, it is just amazing that our bodies know what to do. It took 4 big pushes and out came my darling girl, straight to my chest crying. Nothing will ever compare to the way she looked me in the eyes for the first time.
What an amazing birth story! Thank you Madeleine.
