Thank you Kate for this beautiful waterbirth story.
Connor Patrick born 24/07/2011.
I woke early on. The morning of the 24th and just knew that today would be the day we met bubble #2. I wasn't in pain but felt uncomfortable in a way that was different to the uncomfortable I had experienced for the previous 40 weeks and 3 days of pregnancy. Mid afternoon I called my parents to come over so that when we had to leave for hospital, my daughter was already settled in with them. Around 4 pm I rang our midwife to let her know that contractions were intensifying and getting closer together and we got organized to head up to the birth suite. I was still feeling comfortable enough at this stage to suggest having dinner at grilled on the way to the hospital. While the plan was to dine in their seats seemed to work a treat to move Labour along and I was obviously uncomfortable enough for the waitress to pack our dinner to go (without us asking ). We parked out the front of the hospital and it felt like I had to stop and sway through a million contractions on the way up to the birthing suite (realistically is was more like 10).
We arrived around 6.30 pm and as we had our dinner in toe our midwife Sue said she would check me out once we finished eating. I ate hardly and dinner , what I did eat tasted terrible (I've not eaten grilled since!!!). In the end I walked out to get Sue as dinner wasn't happening but it felt like having a baby was! Sue check me and from memory I was 5-6cm dilated so I jumped in the pool. Labour progressed really quickly once I was in the pool. By 8pm I was pushing (it felt like I pushed forever as with bub #1 I birthed standing beside a bed in 3 pushes). At 8.25pm Connor Patrick was born in the pool and I caught him myself. At 8'10" he wasn't the tiniest little man but he was just perfect. I had no tearing, just a tiny graze. Connor fed immediately and latched perfectly. I regularly dream of having another bub just so I can repeat my perfect birth!
